updated 10:34 am EDT, Tue October 15, 2013

Smartphones, smart watch sold off-contract, unlocked from Sony directly

Sony has put two new Xperia smartphones and an upgraded smart watch on sale in the United States, off-contract. The unlocked Xperia Z Ultra LTE and Xperia Z1 have gone on sale through the company's online store, and are accompanied by the follow-up to the SmartWatch, the SmartWatch 2, which also goes on sale today.

The Xperia Z1 follows on from the Xperia Z in having a similar design, but with a few adjustments, including water and dust-proofing. On the back is a 20.7-megapixel .3-inch CMOS sensor with G-Lens optics and an F2.0 aperture. Inside is a 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM, behind a 5-inch Full HD Triluminos display. The HSPA+ device is being sold for $650, and is available in a choice of black, purple, and white casings.

Sporting a larger 6.4-inch Full HD Triluminos display, the Xperia Z Ultra has an 8-megapixel Exmor RS camera on the back, and is powered by the same processor as the Xperia Z1, with the same RAM as well. Using the same water-proofing and dust-proofing as the smaller smartphone, the phablet retains the same three color choice, but is also available with HSPA+ for $650 or LTE for $680.

The SmartWatch 2 enjoys the same water and dust protection as the Xperia devices to an IP57 rating. The device connects over Bluetooth 3 with NFC pairing, and uses a larger 1.6-inch, 220x176 display when compared to the original. Said to have a battery that lasts for up to three days and able to download apps from Google Play, Sony is selling the SmartWatch 2 for $200.
