Imagination Technology shows new mobile 'Warrior' processor line

updated 10:30 pm EDT, Mon October 14, 2013

New chipset offers far greater speed than predecessors

Processor, communications and cloud services company Imagination Technologies has revealed the first MIPS Series5 "Warrior P-class" CPU, representing a step forward in feature set for MIPS CPU IP cores. The new MIPS P5600 core delivers 32-bit performance together with low-power characteristics in a silicon footprint up to 30 percent smaller than comparable mobile CPU cores.

The new processor features a full 128-bit SIMD designed for high performance on data parallel operations; complete hardware virtualization; support for up to six cores per cluster with high-performance cache coherency; Enhanced Virtual Addressing (EVA), enabling more flexible usage of virtual address space; and Extended Physical Addressing (XPA), which allows a 32-bit system to access physical memory beyond the 32-bit limit, up to 1TB.

Imagination Technologies claims that the new chip delivers 1.2x to 2x performance gains on a wide variety of system-oriented benchmarks over its predecessor, including SPECint2000, Linpack, and Javascript/Browser tests. Data movement on widely-used routines such as MemCopy libraries are up to three times faster. The MIPS 'Warrior' family of CPUs will expand over the next 12 months to comprise both 64-bit and 32-bit variants.

The CPU IP cores comprising the MIPS Series5 'Warrior' family will come in three classes of performance and features: the 'Warrior M-class', an entry-level MIPS cores for embedded and microcontroller applications; the 'Warrior I-class' delivering mid-range MIPS CPUs following on from the interAptiv family; and the 'Warrior P-class' providing high-performance MIPS processors building on the proAptiv family.
