Second-gen iPad mini may be bigger to accommodate Retina tech

updated 01:15 pm EDT, Mon October 14, 2013

Might take after third-gen 9.7-inch iPad

The second-generation iPad mini may be slightly thicker in order to accommodate changes related to a Retina display, suggests Macotakara. The site recently attended a conference in China, where early third-party cases for the new Mini were on hand. The accessories were reportedly built to fit a tablet 7.5mm thick and 134.9mm wide. The first-gen Mini, by contrast, is 7.2mm thick and 134.7mm wide.

Although the case manufacturers may simply be using poor leaked data, an adjustment would be consistent with what happened with the third-generation 9.7-inch iPad. That product was slightly thicker than the iPad 2, a change needed to fit a bigger battery, in turn demanded by the extra power consumption of a Retina display and connected graphics processing.

Apple is generally expected to announce new iPads later this month. The Mini should at least get a Retina display and a faster processor, but may also get a Touch ID sensor and an 8-megapixel rear camera.
