New Sony flagship heading to T-Mobile

A T-Mobile-branded version of Sony's Xperia Z1 flagship handset has shown up in press images leaked by the usually reliable @evleaks. The image reveals little new about the device beyond the fact that it will apparently debut in the United States on the nation's fourth-largest carrier. Sony has been said in other reports to be preparing to scale back its operations in the U.S., as its handsets have largely failed to gain traction in competition against the iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy devices.

At 0.33-inches thick and weighing 6 oz., the Z1 is a bit thicker than its predecessor, the Xperia Z.It also features a larger 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor with redesigned G-Lens optics and a large F2.0 aperture. Powering all that is a discrete BIONZ imaging engine. All of this is said to result in higher image quality than its predecessor and much of its competition, and Sony will highlight the Z1's photographic capabilities in marketing the device.

Inside, the Z1 packs the same 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM that were in the Xperia Z Ultra. It does separate itself, though, with a 6.4-inch Triluminos display that reportedly offers solid color reproduction and viewing angles.

Electronista went hands-on with Sony's new flagship near the end of September, finding it to be a powerful and well-designed device. The device is set for a North American launch at some point in October, though Sony has remained quiet on when that will occur.
