Google Play to highlight tablet-optimized apps by default

updated 02:21 pm EDT, Fri October 11, 2013

Tablet apps automatically shown for larger devices

Google has announced its latest plans to improve visibility of tablet-optimized apps in the Play Store. Starting next month, the "Designed for tablets" view will appear by default when someone visits the store from a tablet and views the top listings, such as Top Free or Trending.

In a blog post detailing the changes, the company encourages developers to make sure their apps meet the tablet criteria to avoid being placed in the "Designed for smartphone" listings.

The number of tablet-optimized apps in the Play Store has been a source of ridicule from Apple, which boasts several hundred thousand native iPad apps. Google has worked with developers to build Android's tablet app offerings, highlighting notable apps and promoting a best-practices checklist to assist with the optimization process.

The Play store changes are scheduled to go into effect on November 21.
