Search giant updates terms of service

Google appears to be preparing a new advertising program that will publish users' personal information in online endorsements. In its latest terms-of-service update, the company outlines how profile information can be used for Shared Endorsements based on the user's +1 clicks, ratings, reviews and comments posted to Google+ or YouTube.

"For example, your friends might see that you rated an album 4 stars on the band's Google Play page," the company notes in its change summary, which was referenced by The New York Times. "And the +1 you gave your favorite local bakery could be included in an ad that the bakery runs through Google."

Information pulled from accounts is said to follow the same sharing limitations set by the user, though anything shared publicly can be used across Google's broader advertising network. If content is set to be shared only with certain circles or friends, it may appear in advertisements targeted at just those users.

The company allows users to opt out of the program by visiting the Shared Endorsements section of their Google+ account settings, while content from users under the age of 18 is automatically excluded.
