Apps twice as crash-prone on iPhone 5s vs. other iPhone 5 models

updated 09:49 am EDT, Fri October 11, 2013

Problems expected to be solved over time

Apps are crashing on the iPhone 5s at twice the rate they are on the iPhone 5 and 5c, according to data from app tracking firm Crittercism. Whereas the 5 and 5c have have a crash rate just under 1 percent, the 5s has been tracked at roughly 2 percent. Crittercism suggests, though, that some issues are natural with new hardware and software, and it's expected that they will eventually be resolved.

The root cause is speculated to be the processors in the 5s. Whereas the 5 and 5c are virtually identical, both of them being based on the 32-bit A6, the 5s uses the 64-bit A7 chip, which developers weren't able to test apps with until the phone was released. On top of this the 5s sports Apple's first motion co-processor, the M7.

Crittercism does argue that Apple is making the transition to 64-bit as seamless as possible, moreso than when PCs and Macs took the same step. It also points out that Apple has already released two updates for iOS 7, looking to solve glitches as quickly as possible.

Makes perfect sense. Hardly any developers own one to test against, availability being what it isn't.

Actually, it's probably an incompatibility with iOS 6 targeted app running on iOS 7. There have been some changes under the hood that some developers must change their apps to accommodate.

...which is why they're NOT crashing on 5c's and 5's running iOS 7?
