Japan Display starts production of 5-inch 1080p WhiteMagic screens

Bright, high-resolution display panels for smartphones go into production

Screen manufacturer Japan Display has started mass production on a new panel for smartphones. The new WhiteMagic display is a five-inch TFT LCD module with a resolution of 1080x1920, giving it a pixel density of 446ppi, which uses the same display technology as earlier, lower resolution models for a bright image with low power requirements.

Just like the screens used in devices such as the Sony Xperia P, the announced display uses a white subpixel to help adjust brightness of an image, reports Impress Watch. An algorithm used to work out the best signal processing system for the LCD panel and backlight is claimed to reduce the power consumption of the backlight without deteriorating picture quality, or alternatively increasing luminance by 1.5 times while still using the same power as other panels for normal brightness levels.

Japan Display did not reveal what companies would be using the new high-resolution WhiteMagic panel, nor when the first devices using the panel will go on sale, though they will likely do so in early 2014. Sony is a highly-likely customer, but others such as Apple may still be looking at it for next year's flagship smartphones.
