Move gives Synaptics range of 'Natural ID' patents and technologies

One-time Samsung partner and fingerprint ID technology manufacturer Validity Sensors is being purchased by human interface technology company Synaptics for an offering said to be worth up to $255 million. The company will pay around $92.5 million in cash and stock, with the remainder arriving over the next "several years" in performance-based payments.

Validity Sensors has done some work with Samsung, but full details of what it has accomplished with the Korean manufacturer is unknown. Microsoft collaborated with Validity over the summer in an ongoing effort to refine Natural ID Fingerprint sensors for Windows 8.1.

"Biometrics has long been of interest to Synaptics as it complements our existing touch-based solutions and offers an exciting new way to interact with devices," said Rick Bergman, president and CEO of Synaptics. "We are thrilled to be adding the world-class Validity team to the Synaptics family. This acquisition is a significant step forward for the company, and serves as a proof point of our dedication for continued growth, innovation and commitment to providing the industry's best and broadest portfolio of human interface solutions."

The stock component of the deal is expected to be in the range of 1.5 million to 2.3 million shares. The acquisition is expected to close in the current quarter, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory reviews.
