Fitbit Force revealed, updates Flex with OLED screen, altimeter

updated 10:22 am EDT, Thu October 10, 2013

Display on Fitbit Force provides activity statistics, call notifications

Fitbit has launched its second wrist-based activity tracker, following on from the Fitbit Flex. The Fitbit Force, leaked last week in promotional materials, updates the Flex's design by adding an altimeter and a small OLED display that provides more detailed information than the five-dot LED light system used in the original.

Just as with the Flex, the Force is able to measure calories burned, distances traveled, and steps taken in a day, as well as the number of floors climbed. Able to monitor sleep patterns and offers a silent alarm, the Force is able to wirelessly synchronize with companion apps on smartphones or a computer over Bluetooth 4.0, with Android users also able to trigger a synchronization over NFC. It is also able to provide some smart watch functionality, providing incoming call notifications from the iPhone 4S or later devices running iOS 7, as well as the time. Weather resistance allows it to avoid damage from sweat and splashes, while its battery life is said to stretch to 7 to 10 days.

Available in a choice of black or slate colors, the Fitbit Force will cost $130, with the first shipments expected in two to three weeks.
