New job listing backs impending China Mobile iPhones

updated 11:45 am EDT, Wed October 9, 2013

Asks for experience with TD-SCDMA

Apple is looking to hire an engineering manager familiar with China Mobile's TD-SCDMA 3G standard, Bloomberg notes. The person's job will be to "support and drive the carrier approval of mobile phones;" notably, Apple is asking for experience with TD-SCDMA, even though China Mobile has yet to carry the iPhone. The listing backs several reports pointing to an imminent China Mobile iPhone launch.

TD-SCDMA has been Mobile's main obstacle to getting the iPhone; no other carrier in the world uses the format, which has so far led Apple to favor Mobile's rivals, China Unicom and China Telecom. The carrier has been building out its LTE network though, which should allow the iPhone 5s and 5c to get full-speed cellular data one way or another. The job listing suggests that Apple may still be planning to build a TD-SCDMA-compatible model; that may be necessary since Mobile's LTE network is still in a fledgling state.

China Mobile is staying quiet on the week's developments. "China Mobile and Apple have been in talks on cooperation, and there is no information that can be disclosed," a spokesperson writes.
