Pentax K-3 uses anti-aliasing simulator, eliminates optical AA filter

Ricoh has added a new digital SLR to its Pentax K camera series, one with a 24-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor. The Pentax K-3, rumored late last month, uses its new PRIME III imaging engine, as well as an anti-aliasing simulator that has the same level of moiré reduction as an optical anti-aliasing filter, which can also be adjusted in tensity or switched off altogether.

Capable of shooting 22 RAW or 60 JPEG images at a maximum speed of 8.3fps, the K-3 uses a shake reduction mechanism that can be used with any compatible Pentax interchangeable lenses. It also has a 27-point auto focus that works within the -3EV to +18EV range, Real-Time Scene Analysis that uses an 86,000-pixel RGB light-metering sensor and improved algorithms for exposure compensation and assisting the auto focus and white balancing.

It can record 1080p video at 30fps or 1080i at 60fps with a stereo mic terminal and an interval movie mode that can capture 4K-resolution clips, has a 3.2-inch LCD monitor, twin SD card slots, and an optical viewfinder with 100-percent field of view and 0.95 magnification. The dust-proof and weather-resistant magnesium alloy camera also supports smartphones, thanks to the optional 16GB FLU card for Pentax, which provides an app-based live view and the option to browse and download images to a smartphone or tablet.

Shipping in November, the Pentax K-3 will cost $1,300 for the body alone, or when bundled with an 18-135mm lens, $1,700. The 16GB FLU card will be made available as an optional extra for $100.
