Apple fiscal Q4 conference call set for Monday, October 28

updated 06:33 pm EDT, Mon October 7, 2013

Results will include first 10 days of new iPhone sales

Apple has scheduled an unusual Monday conference call with analysts to discuss its fiscal fourth-quarter (July-September) results on October 28 at 2PM PT, just after markets close. The results will include the first 10 days of sales from Apple's iPhone refresh, supplementing the debut weekend numbers of over nine million handsets sold by the company. The iPhone's launch and early sellout prompted the company to issue a rare restatement of guidance, with Apple now expected to see near $37 billion in revenue for the quarter.

The company had originally estimated revenues falling between $34 and $37 billion, with margins of around 36 percent. In addition to iPhone sales for the 10 days of availability in the quarter, the company's recent MacBook Air revision will also have seen its first full quarter of availability, and could bolster overall Mac sales numbers.

Analysts also expect Apple to report operating expenses of just under $4 billion, with a tax rate of 26.5 percent. The company hasn't held a quarterly results conference call on a Monday in several years, which may hint at a end-of-month announcement of something new or updated.

Apple's calendar year-end (and fiscal 2014 Q1) looks to be heavily front-loaded, with a number of announcements expected to happen during October -- including updated iPads, the long-awaited Mac Pro refresh, and an expected processor bump to the MacBook Pro line to take advantage of the battery-saving Haswell processor as seen in the MacBook Air and recent iMac refresh.

Alongside such announcements will be the release of Mavericks (OS X 10.9), which includes further efficiency techniques that could elongate battery life in Apple's top-selling portables still further. There is also the possibility of other announcements, including a (possible) HDTV-related product or Apple TV overhaul and a "smartwatch" type device.

Overall, Apple's stock was up 16 percent on September 30 from the beginning of the quarter. As usual, the company will have a live audio stream of the call, and MacNN will provide complete coverage of the facts and figures revealed therein.
