Briefly: new Kindle Fire HD teardown, MixBit app reaches Android

updated 12:50 pm EDT, Thu October 3, 2013

Refreshed Amazon Kindle Fire HD improves repairability score

The updated Kindle Fire HD is a highly repairable tablet, and has received an iFixit repairability score of eight out of ten. Matching the original Kindle Fire in its scoring, the teardown found the new model does not fuse together the front glass and LCD, improving on last year's model by one point, while the majority of the internals is composed of components from the old HD. While the base Kindle Fire HD lacks a camera, there appears to be no obvious space left on the motherboard for one to be added in the future.

MixBit releases Android version of video recording, remixing app

MixBit, the video recording and remixing app created by the founders of YouTube, has now reached Android following its launch on iOS. The free app, in the same vein as Vine and Instagram, allows users to record a clip of up to 16 seconds in length, which can be added alongside other clips to form a longer video, up to an hour in length. Users can also remix other clips uploaded to the service, and share creations on social networks.
