More Amazon smartphone rumors surface, 3D interface detailed

New Amazon report expands on earlier smartphone rumors

More rumors have surfaced concerning two possible Amazon smartphones. Fresh from the launch of refreshed Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD tablet lines late last month, the online retailer is said to be still working on a pair of mobile devices, with one said to have a similar 3D user interface and eye tracking system as reported about earlier this year.

The new rumor from TechCrunch claims that the two devices will consist of an inexpensive smartphone and a more expensive version with the eye tracking. Both are said to be under the in-house "Project B" name, though the more-expensive model is now codenamed "Smith" instead of an earlier codename of "Duke."

The Smith model will apparently use four strategically-placed cameras for eye and head motion tracking, rather than the internal sensors used by the iPhone for iOS 7's similar effect. It is also suggested that the phone will be able to capture the image of an object and then match it to an Amazon-listed version, allowing users to easily buy something they've seen on their travels. The cheaper model will instead resemble a more conventional device running FireOS.

Earlier rumors suggested that Amazon would be offering a device free with Amazon Prime, regardless of what contract it gets used on. The retailer quickly moved to advise this was not the case, and that it would not be releasing a smartphone this year at all.
