Cue shuts down personal assistant service; Apple rumored to be buyer

updated 04:15 pm EDT, Thu October 3, 2013

May hint at plans for Siri

The developers of Cue -- a personal assistant app -- have shut down the app's service, according to an official announcement. In a manner similar to Google Now, the app was able to scan a person's email, contacts, and files and pull out important details for a daily agenda. Cue is promising refunds for Premium subscribers, and says it has already deleted any personal data stored on its servers.

An AppleInsider source claims that the company has been bought by Apple. The sale price is said to be between $35-45 million. Potentially backing the rumor is a TechCrunch claim that Cue recently raised extra funding, making it unlikely that the company became insolvent.

If it has bought Cue, Apple could be hoping to integrate the company's technology into Siri to better compete with Google Now. While Siri has some predictive functions, it's mostly dependent on people asking specific questions, or manually entering data into apps like Calendar. The Cue code could be used to automatically detect when things like flights or restaurant reservations are coming up, and present relevant Siri cards. Alternately, the data could be pushed into iOS' Today view, or a completely new feature.
