Big-name cloud provider Nirvanix files Chapter 11, hosted data at risk

Customers have until October 15 to migrate data to other cloud hosts

Cloud provider Nirvanix has announced that it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company, with deep ties to IBM and Dell, has given customers with hosted data until October 15 to move data or face permanent loss. The shutdown affects a large swath of the tech industry, with the company's largest creditors being IT firm Salesforce, CA-owned Nimsoft, analyst firm Gartner, and Dell Marketing.

"Nirvanix voluntarily sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in order to pursue all alternatives to maximize value for its creditors while continuing its efforts to provide the best possible transition for customers," says a statement on the Nirvanix website.

High-profile users affected by the shutdown are Fox News, National Geographic, and IBM. Electronista has learned that several non-classified US government services rely on the company for cloud storage as well.

The company has peering arrangements with IBM, hopefully simplifying data migration away from the shuttering service. The Nirvanix site notes that Amazon S3, Google Storage, IBM SoftLayer, and Microsoft Azure are acceptable substitutes for what the company currently provides, saying that "we have an agreement with IBM, and a team from IBM is ready to help you."
