Fifth-gen iPad, second-gen iPad mini could upgrade to 8MP rear camera

updated 02:49 pm EDT, Wed October 2, 2013

May bring tablets close to parity with iPhone 5s

The fifth-generation iPad and the second-generation iPad mini may both be upgrading to an 8 megapixel rear camera, says KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Both iPad lines are currently stuck with a 5 megapixel camera, similar to the one on the iPhone 4. Kuo further suggests that the new tablets will be capable of larger apertures, potentially putting them on par with the iPhone 5s.

True parity with the 5s would require two other features, however. No iPad model has ever come equipped with a flash for instance, since the camera on that device is meant more for tasks like scanning and augmented reality than snapshots. The 5s also has a physically larger sensor than previous Apple products, giving it better light sensitivity.

New iPads are typically forecast to be announced sometime later this month. Beyond new cameras, upgrades should include things like faster processors, more RAM, and Touch ID sensors. The fifth-gen iPad is expected to adopt a slimmer Mini-like design, while the Mini itself should gain a Retina display.

That's really not such a bad thing. The video and stills are excellent.
