Dell delves back into consumer tablet arena

Dell's new Venue 7 and Venue 8 tablets mark the company's return to the consumer tablet arena, after a long hiatus following an unsuccessful attempt with the Streak series. The new Android tablets will be sold alongside the company's Windows 8.1-powered Venue "Pro" tablets. Electronista had a chance to try out the new tablets at Intel's Developer Forum conference last month in San Francisco.

Both new Venues follow Dell's conservative design, with a choice between matte red or black plastic housings--just like the rest of the new Venue family. We don't mind the aesthetics and the seemingly solid build quality, though the tablets admittedly lack the design appeal of the iPad and other high-end Android competitors.

We found the Venue 7 and Venue 8 to be on-par with other new Android tablets in terms of performance. These are some of the few Android devices to be powered by Intel's latest Atom processors, a 1.6GHz chip in the seven-inch model and a 2.0GHz variant in the eight-inch tablet.

Both feature displays with 1280x800 resolution, which brings a decent pixel density for the screen sizes, and wide viewing angles thanks to IPS technology.

The Venue 7 and Venue 8 appear to be competitive with other modern Android tablets. None of the features are game changers, which isn't a deal breaker as long as Dell arrives at the right price. Unfortunately we were not informed of the retail price during our hands-on session, though launch details are expected to be announced in the near future.
