Apple continues growing Orlando GPU design team

updated 04:19 pm EDT, Mon September 30, 2013

Works towards next-gen graphics technology

Six more jobs have opened up for Apple's GPU design office in Orlando, notes AppleInsider. All of the positions are within the Hardware Engineering department, and connected to developing chips used in devices like the iPhone and iPad. One such opening is for a site manager, while another is for a program manager who will handle "SoC [system-on-chip] embedded silicon design."

Apple has been putting more and more emphasis on in-house processor design. The first ever Apple-designed processor, the A4, emerged in 2010. 2012's A6 implemented the first Apple-designed CPU core, and earlier this month the company unveiled the A7 -- the first 64-bit chip in a mass-market smartphone -- along with the M7 motion co-processor. The Orlando team's work could conceivably lead to major graphics performance boosts in the A8. The iPhone 5s, the first device with an A7, uses PowerVR-based graphics.
