Verizon honoring website glitch, some customers retain unlimited data

updated 09:33 pm EDT, Mon September 30, 2013

No grandfathered unlimited data plan exists, problem blamed on software upgrade

Over the weekend, Verizon experienced a "software issue" that involved some customer's orders of upgraded smartphones. A number of buyers who were upgrading devices were able to maintain an unlimited monthly data feature while paying a subsidized price, which the company had previously eradicated. Verizon is honoring the unlimited-data grandfathering on the approved orders, however, as well as offering the phones at the subsidized price.

Verizon Wireless corrected this software issue earlier today. The company no longer offers unlimited data plans, and customers who want to retain existing unlimited data plans must pay the full unsubsidized retail price for a replacement phone.

Electronista has learned that while the unlimited data offer applied to all of its customers with the old unlimited data plans with devices on the LTE "4G" network, the vast majority of the upgraded devices were iPhones. The error was corrected after a six-hour availability window. A company spokesperson told us that the unlimited data glitch is limited to less than 16,000 customers.

We apologize profusely for making some of our customers happy. We endeavor to make sure all our customers feel as unhappy and gouged as possible, but occasionally, mistakes happen.

Since it would cost us money to cancel these contracts, we will instead just send some high-school dropout to each of their homes and slash the tires on their cars.

Why didn't anybody tell me about this while it was still available. This is why I didn't upgrade from my 4s, I didn't want to lose my unlimited data. Maybe they'll screw up again.....
