TV streaming service sees delays in Chicago launch

TV streaming service Aereo will not be expanding its offerings to Chicago on schedule, the company revealed on Friday. The Chicago expansion was slated to launch on September 13, but "issues with [the] beta site" have prevented delayed the launch, the company said. Aereo has not given any indication when the service might go live, but it assures interested parties that "we are working our fastest to find a solution that works."

Aereo's service relies on micro-antennas in order to capture live television broadcasts and stream them over the air to owners of iPads, iPhones, and iPods. The service is slated to arrive on Android in the near future, but Aereo has given no indication on whether that project will soon see release.

While Chicago waits, Aereo has already launched in Utah, as well as in Boston. The company plans to launch in 22 cities over the course of 2013, including Austin, Dallas, Washington, D.C., Birmingham, and Tampa.

Aside from beta site issues, Aereo's biggest problem is resistance from television broadcasters, who claim that Aereo is illegally retransmitting protected material. The broadcasters have sued Aereo numerous times, with both sides lodging wins and losses in the courts.
