Microsoft working on 'Office Reader' for Win 8, 'Lens' app as well

updated 10:24 am EDT, Fri September 27, 2013

New software under Gemeni codename

Microsoft is reportedly working on a new series of Office utilities for Windows 8 and the Windows Phone mobile platform. Office division VP Kirk Koenigsbauer reportedly demonstrated one of the new apps, Office Reader for Windows 8, at an internal meeting yesterday, unnamed sources have told The Verge. The software is said to serve as a universal reader with support for Office documents, PDFs, e-books, textbooks and web pages.

The software reportedly adopts the Windows 8 interface style, with different sections for library content, sources and recommendations. PDF or e-book text is said to be reflowed for easy navigation on a touchscreen, while various tools can be manipulated using a stylus.

Aside from the Office Reader demo, Koenigsbauer also reportedly previewed real-time document editing for the Office Web Apps. The company is also said to be working on a new OneNote Capture cloud-based service, which will work on any device with a browser.

The upcoming Windows Phone app, referred to as Office Lens, reportedly enables users to take a picture of a whiteboard. The words are converted to text via optical character recognition and saved.

The various utilities are said to be part of a renewed effort known as "Gemini," with the first arrivals expected sometime in 2014.
