Google rolls out same-day local delivery service in San Francisco

updated 12:46 pm EDT, Wed September 25, 2013

Service to compete with eBay, Amazon

Google has announced that its same-day shipping program is now available to the general public in much of the Bay Area peninsula, from San Francisco to San Jose. The service, known as Google Shopping Express, had begun as a limited pilot program early this year.

Shoppers can browse inventory from the web-based shopping portal, or via new mobile apps that will be available for Android and iOS devices. Participating retailers include small local retailers and grocers, along with larger retailers such as Target, Walgreens and REI.

The service competes with similar offerings from other shopping portals, including Amazon's AmazonFresh grocery delivery in the Bay Area and standard same-day delivery in nearly a dozen other cities. eBay also offers same-day delivery in the Bay Area and other select markets, with products promised to arrive within an hour.

Google is currently offering a promotion for free unlimited delivery for six months. Standard pricing appears to be set at $5 per store for each order.
