French finance ministry investigates Apple deals with iPhone carriers

Probe believed to be separate from antitrust investigations

France's finance ministry is investigating contract terms between Apple and local carriers selling the iPhone, according to reports. The initiative is believed to be part of a broader look at contracts between carriers and phone makers. It's separate, however, from a European Commission investigation into Apple's contract dealings.

The probe is also distinct from two antitrust investigations being conducted by France's Autorité de la Concurrence. One is concerned about whether Apple is treating resellers fairly; earlier this year, regulators raided Apple's offices for documentary evidence. The other is concerned with the mobile app market, and could see antitrust charges brought against individual companies like Apple or Google, and/or the institution of new industry-wide policies.
