updated 09:40 pm EDT, Wed September 25, 2013

New line of cards features some models with audio processing on-card

AMD today unveiled the AMD Radeon R9 290X, R9 290, R9 280X, R9 270X, R7 260X and R7 250 graphics cards. AMD also introduced Mantle and AMD TrueAudio technology, the latest innovations that provide both gamers and game developers with audio and performance enhancements for compatible games, as well as a more streamlined cross-platform development path.

Mantle assists game developers in developing on multiple platforms by taking advantage of similarities between GCN-powered PCs and consoles to simplify game development process. Mantle will be detailed further at the AMD Developer Summit, APU13, taking place November 11-13.

AMD TrueAudio technology gives game developers a programmable audio pipeline on the GPU. Enabled games can feature more realistic environmental dynamics, a wider array of sound effects, directional audio and more. AMD TrueAudio works in concert with the user's existing audio hardware, and will be available in the higher-end of the new range of R9 video cards.

The company claims that the fastest card in the line, the R9 290x, will push five teraflops of processing power. The card also has 4GB of VRAM, while the R7 250 has 1GB. Detailed specifications are not yet available, and the new cards will be seen at retail in the "near future."

Prices range from $90 for the entry level R7 250, with the mid-range R9 280x selling for $300. Pricing has not been made public for the high-end R9 290x.
