AT&T to launch broadcast video network over LTE spectrum

CEO talks video strategy

AT&T chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson has announced plans to launch a broadcast video network that will operate on the company's LTE spectrum. Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communicopia conference, the executive highlighted the service as part of a larger strategy to reduce overall bandwidth allocation for video content viewed on mobile devices.

The company's mobile efforts have become "all about architecting networks to deliver video," Stephenson said, according to a FierceWireless report. "[LTE Broadcast] seems to be a very elegant solution."

The technology theoretically improves network efficiency by broadcasting video content to a larger number of devices over a smaller portion of spectrum than would otherwise be required if each device was receiving its own stream. The company plans to use part of the 700MHz spectrum licenses that it purchased from Qualcomm, which had been used for the MediaFLO mobile TV service.

"You'll see it mature in scale within the three-year time horizon," Stephenson added.

AT&T will be competing directly with Verizon to offer LTE Broadcast service. The latter company reportedly set 2014 as a deadline for its first trial run, streaming the Super Bowl to mobile devices.
