iOS 7 activations break 200 million

Apple achieved over nine million in combined iPhone 5s and 5c sales this launch weekend, according to an official statement. The figure tops the five million iPhone 5 units Apple achieved last year, and handily shattered even optimistic analyst estimates, causing an upward spike in the stock price. Apple hasn't broken down sales figures between the 5s and 5c, but it's generally believed that the 5s sold up to three times as many units, since it's Apple's flagship product and the 5c is effectively an iPhone 5 with a new plastic back and modest improvements.

The company adds that since iOS 7 was released on September 18, over 200 million devices have been updated to the firmware so far, which compares with 100 million updates to iOS 6 in the same timeframe last year. The pool of iOS devices has greatly increased since 2012, however, making it difficult to determine if iOS 7 is inherently more popular.

Well, hold the phone a bit...

Didn't Apple offer the new iPhones in more markets worldwide this year? Would like to see last year's launch numbers compared with this years before claiming success. (Like how many phones sold last year at the US launch compared to this year's US launch).

sammaffei: I see your point, but since all initial inventory was depleted both times, the only true measurement is the total number of units sold. A U.S. breakdown is helpful, but was the U.S. percentage of iPhone 5S units the same as the iPhone 5 launch? Whose to say Apple would not have sold 9 million iPhones this weekend if they were only available to the U.S. market?
