Sony reconsiders Asia-only PS Vita TV launch after 'strong response'

updated 11:42 am EDT, Fri September 20, 2013

US, Europe release of PS Vita TV could happen, states Sony senior vice president

Sony is considering releasing its PlayStation Vita TV set-top box in the United States and European markets, following a "strong response" from gamers. The move effectively reverses an earlier report, where an executive claimed the company was "not planning" to release the device further afield than markets close to Japan, such as China and South Korea.

Masayasu Ito, senior vice president and division president of Business Division 1 at Sony Computer Entertainment, told Engadget that it is now a possibility. "During the presentation yesterday, the European/American users showed a very strong response, more than we expected, and there has been a strong inquiry/request/demand that they want the product," said Ito, though he warns that Sony has to "watch the timing and watch the environment carefully" for such a release.

Yesterday's presentation at the Tokyo Game Show saw Sony demonstrate how the Vita TV could be used in conjunction with a PlayStation 4, by streaming gameplay to the Vita TV in another room and using a DualShock controller to play the game itself. It has also been suggested that, via the Sony-owned Gaikai game streaming service, it could in theory support gameplay of PlayStation 3 titles, something which the PlayStation 4 will also be capable of doing.
