iOS App of the Week: Angry Birds Star Wars II

updated 01:29 pm EDT, Fri September 20, 2013

Angry Birds Star Wars II adds new gameplay

Rovio's Angry Birds is not a new entry when it comes to the App Store, however, with every new release seems to find additional ways to innovate. After gaining the Star Wars licensing Rovio could have simply applied a skin to the game and called it a day, but instead chose to use the new world to further expand the game. Angry Birds Star Wars II follows in this pattern by introducing several new features, including the first opportunity to fling pigs at birds.

Angry Birds Star Wars II features a brand net set of levels, split into campaigns for both light and dark sides of the Force. Similar to the first Star Wars entry, the latest game's levels follow along paths, however branches in the paths can now be activated by hitting specified targets in certain levels. The game also features more than 30 different characters to play as, most of which are not simply copies of characters from the first game. Jango Fett fires missiles, while a young Anakin Skywalker flies a podracer, and Jar Jar Binks swings around after latching onto objects with his tongue.

Rovio has also used this release to introduce a few new ways to play the game. In-game currency, earned by completing achievements or by purchasing with real money, can be used to acquire new characters. These characters can then be swapped out for the default birds in any level, giving players even more ways to complete each level. As the characters are used they accrue individual points, which will eventually unlock a special bonus level for that specific character.

On top of all this, Angry Birds Star Wars II also includes Telepods. Physical toys that can be used to activate certain characters in the game by simply placing the toy on the device's camera. These are not necessary to progress through the game, but do provide a more hands on way to interact with the game.

If you are a fan of Rovio's pig smashing series then you will feel right at home in Angry Birds Star Wars II. The game brings more of the popular physics-based puzzles while introducing enough new elements to keep gameplay fresh and rewarding. Angry Birds Star Wars II can be purchased in the App Store for $1.

Other notable apps released this week include Google Wallet, Infinity Blade III, and Camera+.

Google Wallet has long been available on Android devices, but starting this week made its way to iOS. The app allows users to send money to friends in the US with an e-mail address, as well as to store and manage credit and debit cards, loyalty programs, and promotional offers. Meanwhile, Infinity Blade III is the final chapter in the Infinity Blade trilogy, featuring an evolved story line and graphics that push iOS devices even harder. Finally, Camera+ 4 is a reworked version of the popular camera app that has been designed to match iOS 7's aesthetics and also expand sharing capabilities.
