DTS brings Play-Fi audio streaming to iOS devices

updated 04:15 pm EDT, Thu September 19, 2013

Wi-Fi streaming works with Android or iOS

DTS has announced that its Play-Fi wireless streaming system is now supported by iOS devices. Users can now stream audio from iPhones and iPads, along with Android devices and Windows PCs, to audio equipment located throughout a home via an existing Wi-Fi network.

The streaming technology is claimed to be lossless and synchronized, enabling multiple speakers to be simultaneously connected to a single audio source without lag. The new iOS app provides access to iTunes content alongside web-based services such as Pandora, matching the functionality of the current Android app.

The Play-Fi standard is currently supported by a limited number of devices, including Wren's V5PF wireless speaker and Phorus' PS1 speaker and PR1 receiver. DTS is still promoting the technology to be licensed for additional devices, however the system competes directly with Apple's own AirPlay standard that is already supported by a wide range of equipment.

Play-Fi for iOS will be available as a free download in the App Store.
