Microsoft working on original TV programming for Xbox Live

Hundreds of ideas under consideration

Microsoft is reportedly preparing a wide range of original television programming for its Xbox streaming video service. In an interview with Reuters, Microsoft Studios VP Phil Spencer said the company is "very close" to announcing details of the new projects, which will include content that is not directly related to games.

"But I do think there will be a certain level of interactivity to what we do," Spencer added.

The executive reportedly referred to the ideas as "Nancy projects," suggesting the company's new head of entertainment and digital media, former CBS Television Studios president Nancy Tellem, has been responsible for the content expansion.

Microsoft has already confirmed that it is working on a television series based on the popular Halo game series, produced by Steven Spielberg, however the latest comments point to a much wider scope that will compete with original programming offered by streaming rivals Netflix and Hulu.

The current Xbox 360 was recently updated with new streaming-video apps, adding content from Comedy Central and Nickelodeon, with additional material expected ahead of the Xbox One launch in November.
