Windows Phone 8 gains FIPS approval, usable on US government networks

updated 11:46 am EDT, Wed September 18, 2013

Accreditation of Windows Phone 8 brings it in line with Apple, Samsung

The Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system has earned a key government accreditation, allowing it to be used on secure networks operated by the US government. The FIPS 140-2 certification allows for Windows Phone devices to come under consideration for governmental organizations to use in situations requiring security and the use of encrypted communications.

The certification is a standard set by the US government to "accredit the cryptographic algorithms that protect sensitive data" inside smartphones and other devices, according to the Windows Phone Blog. Windows Phone 8 has been accredited for a total of nine cryptographic certificates, awarded by the Cryptographic Module Validation Program, which is jointly run by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the Communications Security Establishment Canada.

The new accreditation will help Microsoft sell Windows Phone 8 devices to not only the US government, but also to other governments that recognize the FIPS 140-2 certification. This also brings Windows Phone 8 in line with devices from Apple and Samsung, which also have the same certification.
