Microsoft prices upgrades to Windows 8.1, to ship full installations

updated 05:02 pm EDT, Tue September 17, 2013

Windows Media Center still a paid-for upgrade in Windows 8.1

Microsoft has revealed its pricing strategy for Windows 8.1 sales, when it is released on October 18th. While users of Windows 8 will be able to upgrade to Windows 8.1 at no charge, Microsoft will not be providing a heavily-discounted Windows 8.1 Pro discount similar to the one it had at Windows 8's launch.

In the United States, upgrades to Windows 8.1 will cost $120, with Windows 8.1 Pro priced at $200. Customers buying devices running Windows 8.1 will be able to upgrade from the basic edition to Windows 8.1 Pro for $100, with Pro users offered Windows Media Center for an extra $10. During last year's launch, upgrades to Windows 8 Pro cost $40 online and $70 for the disk-based version, with users able to claim Windows 8 Media Center as a free upgrade, though these rose to current prices on January 31st.

Also in a change to Windows 8, the new version will be available to buy as "full version software" online and at retail, rather than as an upgrade. This will allow users to perform a fresh install from scratch such as for system builders or those running virtual machines.
