Twitter improves verified account access, updates beta Android app

updated 10:05 am EDT, Fri September 13, 2013

Verified accounts can filter posts automatically, show other verified users

Twitter has altered the way its microblogging system operates for verified accounts, by adding new ways to filter incoming messages. At the same time, it has been revealed that Twitter is putting forward a complete redesign of its Android app, with the current version 5.0 being tested out in beta by a small group of users.

Verified users will now see three tabs at the top of their interactions page, according to a company blog post. "All" will show all conversations that would normally appear on the page, while the new "Filtered" algorithmically filters out posts that Twitter believes to be unhelpful to the user, such as spam messages. A third option, "Verified," will only show posts from other verified accounts. While it is active on the web version, Twitter hopes to add it to the mobile app edition soon.

The redesigned beta app, seen by The Verge, removes the current tabbed layout, in favor of a sliding panel. Users will be able to swipe between columns, with the current four sections being added to by columns for Activity, Trending, and finding other accounts to follow. It is not known how long it will be until the app graduates from beta and becomes generally downloadable.
