Three details 4G rollout, expanding to 42 UK cities in 2014

Plans to cover 98 percent of UK population by end 2015

British mobile phone network Three has revealed more details about its 4G LTE roll-out in the United Kingdom. New areas have been added to both its 2013 and 2014 4G launch lists, with five more cities joining the already-announced London, Manchester, and Birmingham network updates for 2013, and a total of 42 more cities by the end of next year.

Reading, Oldham, Dudley, West Bromwich, and Wolverhampton will receive 4G signal before the end of this year, reports CNET, though after the initial LTE network launch itself. In 2014, three cities in Scotland, one city in Wales, and 38 areas of England will gain coverage, though the general launch timings for each area remain unknown. By the end of 2015, Three hopes to cover at least 98 percent of the UK population with LTE phone signal.

While O2, Vodafone, and EE have had a minor head start in launching their 4G networks, Three will be tempting customers over to its plans by not charging extra for 4G service. Customers on existing contracts will be able to use their existing data allowance on 4G without penalty, including users on all-you-can-eat data plans, so long as they have a 4G-capable device.
