3DMark benchmarking software now on iOS
After an initial Android-only mobile release, Futuremark's 3DMark software has made its way to iOS. 3DMark features three tests for benchmarking performance, including Ice Storm, Ice Storm Extreme, and Ice Storm Unlimited. Ice Storm is an OpenGL ES 2.0 benchmark that uses two graphics tests to stress the GPU performance of a device and a physics tests to stress its CPU performance. Meanwhile, Ice Storm Extreme runs the same tests but raises the off-screen rendering from 720p to 1080p and uses higher quality textures and post-processing effects. Finally, in Ice Storm Unlimited the rendering engine uses a a fixed time step between frames and renders exactly the same frames in every run on every device. 3DMark is a free download and will run on any iOS device that can run iOS 6 or above -- excluding the fourth-generation iPod touch.
