Nissan reveals concept smart watch for Nismo car drivers

updated 06:31 am EDT, Mon September 9, 2013

Watch monitors driver, provides car feedback notifications

Automobile manufacturer Nissan has revealed its own concept of smart watch, designed to work in tandem with its line of performance sports cars. The Nismo Concept Watch, instead of providing the usual features associated with smart watches such as the Samsung Galaxy Gear and the Pebble, focuses on monitoring the driver as well as offering messages and details relating to the car itself.

The Nismo will provide updates based on the car's average speed and fuel consumption for normal driving, vehicle telematics and performance data when on a track, monitor the driver's heart rate, and offer tailored car messages from Nissan. Connecting to the car over Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy, it will also apparently monitor social networks for comments about the driver, though this is more for races rather than the daily commute, and is said to have a battery life of over seven days under "normal usage conditions."

While Nissan has unveiled the Nismo ahead of this week's Frankfurt Motor Show, the company has not revealed how much it will cost on its own, or even if it will be available separately from the Nissan Nismo car itself.
