LG Display, Intel working on LCD panel with built-in WiDi support

updated 07:21 am EDT, Mon September 9, 2013

Panel will help display manufacturers offer WiDi with minimal requirements

LG Display is working with Intel to develop its first LCD panel for monitors that will have Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) integrated into it. The new panel, measuring 23.8 inches, will allow users to stream content from notebooks and desktops to the display, without requiring a cable to be connected between the two devices.

As the LCD module itself contains the WiDi chipset, this would in theory mean that display manufacturers relying on LCD panels from LG could offer WiDi support in their own offerings, without needing to introduce an alternative system. Though the price difference between those with and without WiDi remains unknown, the price increase between the two could save OEMs money and space inside the monitor housing for other features or to bring the overall cost of the monitor to customers down.

Intel and LG will be debuting the WiDi-equipped panel at the 2013 Intel Developer Forum, starting tomorrow.
