Report: Microsoft to debut Surface desktop docking station

updated 04:10 pm EDT, Sat September 7, 2013

Surface Docking Station to be compatible with Surface Pro, Pro 2

Alongside the forthcoming revised editions of its Surface tablet line, Microsoft will also roll out a desktop docking station, according to new reports. That station will turn the Surface into a more powerful device, with a number of additional video, port, and networking options. There is, as yet, no word on pricing or availability, but Windows Supersite expects it to ship along with the refreshed Surface models.

The Surface Docking Station, according to reports, will be compatible only with the Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2. It is described as a "kind of hulking device where the Surface Pro/2 slides in at an angle and is held in place [by] arms on the side that are pulled out to release the tablet."

In terms of capabilities, the Docking Station will pack a mini DisplayPort for video-out, as well as a 1Gbps Ethernet port. It is also said to have a single USB 3.0 port on the side and three USB 2.0 ports on the back. Additionally, the device will sport dedicated microphone and headphone/speaker ports.

Rumors surrounding the Surface line of devices have been scarce since the devices' launch, but they have picked up recently, indicating that Microsoft may be on the verge of showing off its device line refresh. In addition to the Docking Station, Microsoft is also said to be working on a Power Cover keyboard accessory for the Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2. That device would serve as a keyboard attachment for the Microsoft-built tablet, but it would also have a battery built in, extending the overall battery life of the device.
