Microsoft, AT&T make Lumia 1020 price drop permanent

Cost-conscious fans of Nokia's Lumia 1020 have lucked out, as Microsoft and AT&T have decided to drop the price of the device by $100 for good. The most powerful smartphone-camera combination on the market can now be had for $199. The announcement came Friday by way of the Windows Phone Blog. That price point is available at AT&T's site, its physical retail locations, and at Microsoft Stores.

Customers buying the 1020 from a Microsoft Store can also take advantage of a limited time offer. When buying the phone for $199, customers will also receive a free Nokia camera grip -- a $74 value. That offer -- applicable only to customers buying a new Lumia 1020 -- is valid until September 22 and dependent upon available supply.

With its 41-megapixel PureView camera technology, the Lumia 1020 made a splash in the tech news world upon its release. It is generally acknowledged to be the best smartphone camera on the market. Its reliance upon the Windows Phone 8 platform, though, is said by some to hobble the device, as Microsoft's mobile operating system lags far behind both Android and iOS in terms of app volume and quality.
