Microsoft Surface 2 to have optional Power Cover keyboard accessory

Surface 2 set to gain rechargeable Power Cover, extend battery life

The Microsoft Surface 2 will feature a TypeCover variant with a built-in rechargeable battery designed to extend the life of the unit when on the go. Dubbed the Power Cover, by Neowin, it will be compatible with the Surface 2 (running Windows RT 8.1) and the Surface Pro 2. It is also expected to be backwards compatible with the current Surface Pro, but not the current Surface RT.

The Power Cover is said to work just like the current TypeCover, which incorporates a traditional tactile keyboard -- the TouchCover, however, will not integrate a battery and continue as is, while a non-battery laden TypeCover will also continue. The Power Cover will charge the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, which will further help to supplement the additional two hours of battery life gained with the upgrade to the latest Intel 'Haswell' processors.

Other details about the accessory to emerge include that it will weigh 1.1 pounds (520 grams), which is around twice as much as the current TypeCover. It will also be slightly thicker at .38-inches (9.75mm), which also close to twice as thick as the current TypeCover. The Power Cover will reportedly ship later this year, after the launch of the second-gen Surface tablets. [via Winsupersite]
