LG D820 passes through FCC, looks suspiciously like the Nexus 5

A mystery LG smartphone has been spotted undergoing certification with the FCC. Dubbed the LG D820, the rear cover of the device bears a strong resemblance to the previously unseen Nexus handset recently appeared at the Android 4.4 'KitKat' unveiling. If the LG D820 is indeed the new Nexus 5, it will center on a 5-inch 1080p display and pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset.

Early rumors had suggested that the Nexus 5 could be loosely based on the LG G2, although it now seems that it won't be sporting the G2's 5.2-inch display, but rather a 5-inch panel. It will, however, carry the same processor as the LG flagship handset, but will drop battery capacity down from 3,000mAh in the G2 to a more frugal 2300mAh. A key upgrade from the Nexus 4 is the introduction of 7-band LTE support, making it compatible with the AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint 4G networks, as well as various others around the globe.

The LG D820 FCC filing also reveals that it is running firmware M8974A and that its software version is listed as "osp_hammerhead-userdebugKyeLimePieFACTORYeng.sangjoon84.lee.20130618.015154." This is interesting as Google has since announced that the next version of Android won't be called Key Lime Pie, as seen in this string, but rather 'KitKat,' suggesting that Google did originally intend to use that name. KitKat's are certainly more universally appealing than Key Lime Pie, which could help to explain the name change.

With Google slashing Nexus 4 pricing by $100 seemingly to clear inventory, it seems as though the LG D820/Nexus 5 will be released in the next few weeks and will be the first to sport Android 4.4. [via S4G]
