LG reveals 77-inch curved OLED Ultra HD television at IFA

updated 06:39 am EDT, Fri September 6, 2013

Increased resolution, size compared to curved OLED HDTV launched in July

Following on from the 4K launches by Samsung, Sony and others at IFA in Germany, LG has shown its largest Ultra HD OLED television. Using the same principle as its 55-inch HDTV, the 77-inch model hopes to improve its picture quality through using a concave design, at the same time as upgrading the 1080p resolution from the smaller version.

Made from combining LG's WRGB OLED and its Ultra HD technology for its high-contrast and high definition pictures, likely by using LG's four-color pixel system with an extra white sub-pixel. The curvature in theory allows the image to be equidistant from the viewer's eyes when viewed from straight ahead, in order to minimize distortion at the edges.

Currently only a demonstration model, it is likely that LG will be revealing more details for the screen before or during CES early next year. The price could be extremely high if Ultra HD televisions continue to maintain their current levels, such as the company's own 55-inch and 65-inch UHD televisions which launched in the US in July for $7,000 and $9,000 respectively. The curved 55-inch OLED HDTV was priced at $15,000 at launch in the US, also in July, with the larger and higher-resolution version almost certainly going to cost more.
