Toshiba Camileo X-Sports action camera set for Q4 launch in Europe

updated 08:21 am EDT, Thu September 5, 2013

Uses 12-megapixel CMOS sensor, Full HD video recording

Toshiba has introduced a new action camera to its line of Camileo camcorders. The Camileo X-Sports houses a 12-megapixel CMOS sensor that can record Full HD resolution video at 60 frames per second, as well as taking photos while recording video, at set time intervals, or in a burst mode, housed inside a case that can withstand drops from as high as five feet.

The lightweight 3.3-ounce unit includes a 10x digital zoom, an ultra-wide angle lens, an electronic image stabilizer and a two-inch embedded LCD screen on the back. While it has USB and HDMI connections, along with space for a memory card, it can also connect over Wi-Fi to a smartphone running a companion app, which acts as a remote control and allows for sharing of images and videos with social networks.

An accompanying wrist remote will provide basic status feedback to the wearer, as well as providing the option to switch between photo and video modes, and to start and stop video recording. As is usual for sports cameras, the Camileo X-Sports has a wide array of mounts, including a waterproof casing capable of surviving to a depth of 60 meters, with other mounds also available.

Toshiba will be shipping the Camileo X-Sports in Europe for 250 euro ($330) in the fourth quarter of this year, but it is not yet decided if it will go on sale in the US.
