Ricoh Theta camera shoots spherical pictures for interactive viewing

updated 10:23 am EDT, Thu September 5, 2013

Twin lens captures entire scene

Ricoh has introduced the Theta, a camera that captures fully spherical images in a single shot. The pocketable camera uses a folded optical system with twin lenses to encapsulate an entire scene, which can be viewed and edited on an iPhone. Resulting images can then be experienced via an interactive viewer on the company's website.

The spherical images are captured in a single shot, enabling moving objects to be included in the scene. The approach eliminates some of the problems that can be encountered when using multiple images that have been stitched together.

The camera lacks its own display, requiring an iPhone to be present if the user needs to preview shots. Aside from Ricoh's own Theta app, Microsoft's Photosynth app can also be used to view and edit the stills. Ricoh expects to add support for Android devices before the end of the year.

An integrated battery is claimed to last for 200 captures, while 4GB of internal storage is said to hold approximately 1200 images.
