Retailer works on clearing out stock
Best Buy has dropped the price of a 16GB iPhone 5 to $150 at its retail stores. The company has offered similar deals in the past, but the new discount may be the last of its kind, since Apple is expected to announce two new iPhone models at its September 10th press event. If the iPhone 5 is still available after that point, it will likely drop at least another $50 in price.
The fate of Apple's older iPhones is uncertain. In the past it has kept two prior generations on sale as a cheap alternative. The new iPhone 5C, though, is specifically meant to address cost, which could mean that the iPhone 5 and/or iPhone 4S will disappear. In that equation the iPhone 5 may be the most likely to vanish, since the 5C is thought to be little more than a 5 with plastic backing instead of metal and glass. Keeping the 4S around would let carriers continue to offer a "free" iPhone to people on contract. The new flagship iPhone, meanwhile, should be the 5S.
