Samsung's second IFA event showcases UHD, OLED televisions

updated 07:35 am EDT, Thu September 5, 2013

New 98-inch version of S9 UHD TV launched, UHD OLED TV teased

Samsung has revealed more high-resolution televisions at its second press conference at IFA in Germany. Aside from showing off its previously-announced curved OLED HDTV and its F9000 line, it launched a new model of 4K television in its S9 range, dwarfing its current 85-inch model, and teased that it is working on an OLED UHD TV.

The new S9 features the same floating-frame design as the original model, yet increases the screen size to 98 inches. This places it as the medium-sized option between the first 85-inch TV and the 110-inch hinted at during CES. Though light on specifications, it is believed by CNET that the 98-inch model will be priced between the two others in the product line, and have a similar feature set, such as a high contrast ratio from Samsung's Precision Black Pro technology, a three-way 2.2-channel 120-Watt audio system, 4K video upscaling, and smart TV features. The 110-inch model also made an appearance at the company's stand.

While Samsung said it would be showing off its 4K OLED television at IFA, it was confined to its in-show booth, and did not appear on stage. A proof of concept, the television "represents an unprecedented leap forward for picture quality and sharp contrast with its self-emitting pixels and natural motion" according to the company, but has declined to state when such displays will become available to buy.
