Microsoft Executive: Xbox 360 will be supported for three more years

updated 09:56 pm EDT, Wed September 4, 2013

Xbox marketing officer claims 100 games slated for release for the 360

At the same event that saw news of the Xbox One production unit CPU running faster than previously known, Xbox chief marketing and strategy officer Yusuf Mehdi noted that the Xbox 360 was going to remain viable and supported by Microsoft for three more years. The long life and promised support for the console was attributed to it being "incredibly profitable now in the tail" given its long life, wide support, and large game library.

"We've seen our Xbox Live subscription service continue to grow, we're up to 48 million members now. We're shipping more games than we've ever done before. Those are things I look to and say, 'hey, we can grow not just top line revenue but also profitability,'" said Mehdi.

The executive is expecting to ship over 100 more games for the Xbox 360 before the effective end of life of the console. If the estimate of the console's longevity is correct, the Xbox 360 will have lasted 11 years, which would make it the longest-lived, fully-supported console of any generation, assuming Sony doesn't do the same thing with the PlayStation 3.

Microsoft revealed a new Xbox 360 model along side the Xbox One, dubbed the Xbox 360E. A recent teardown by iFixt shows that the new Xbox 360E continues with the same heat sink and chip from the outgoing Xbox 360S model, and no significant changes, other than cosmetic, over the Xbox 360S.
