Waterproof Action Cap adds wrist-based remote control accessory

Sony has revealed a new version of its Action Cam with some weight and feature changes, as well as a new accessory. The new version introduces a 35-percent smaller and 25-percent lighter design inside a waterproof housing, with the electronics giant introducing a wrist-based Live-View Remote for monitoring video being recorded.

The Action Cam has a 170-degree field of view, which narrows to 120 degrees when SteadyShot is turned on, thanks to its Card Zeiss Tessar lens. Its Exmor R CMOS sensor can record Full HD video at 60fps, can also capture 11.9-megapixel still photos, record images upside down, and take photographs at regular intervals. Able to establish a Wi-Fi connection over NFC, the camera can be controlled by a smartphone or the Live-View Remote, with the smartphone option providing more control options, and can be used with a number of mountings and harnesses.

Connecting to a computer over USB, the accompanying PlayMemories Home app can be used to edit files, with a Map View mode able to track and display a trail of progress synchronized to video, thanks to the camera's built-in GPS unit, while Multi View can take and synchronize video from two Action Cams, which allows for split-screen videos from multiple viewpoints.

Sony will be shipping the new Action Cam from the end of September, at an expected $300. The Live-View Remote will cost $150.
